Your dinosaur's speed is driven entirely by your real-time internet connection quality — three metrics are measured from your browser and combined into a single velocity every 500ms.
Round-trip time: how quickly a small request travels from your browser to a server and back. Lower RTT = faster dino.
Measured by: fetch() to speed.cloudflare.com/cdn-cgi/trace with cache: 'no-store', sampled every 1.5 seconds. Uses Cloudflare's nearest Point of Presence (PoP) — this reflects real internet latency, not the game server's own tunnel overhead. A rolling window of the last 10 samples is averaged.
Half-speed threshold: 40 ms.
How much your ping varies over time. A rock-steady connection scores well; a fluctuating one is penalised even if the average RTT looks decent.
Measured by: standard deviation of the same RTT rolling window of 10 samples.
Half-speed threshold: 20 ms of jitter. (Good Wi-Fi sits around 3–5 ms; heavy congestion or mobile can exceed 40 ms.)
How fast your connection can pull data. Gives a logarithmic boost — raw bandwidth matters, but with sharply diminishing returns once you're past ~50 Mbps.
Measured by: downloading 1 MB from speed.cloudflare.com/__down and timing it, every 8 seconds. Boost: +15% at 10 Mbps, +29% at 100 Mbps, +43% at 1 Gbps.
